2. South Node Ruler By Sign

This tells us of a person’s role in the environments symbolized by his or her South Node. For whatever reasons including talent, willingness or eagerness, being in the right place at the right time (or the wrong place at the wrong time!), the lives of the soul have been shaped by performing a role in his or her family, workplace, community and/or society. It is just one kind of vehicle to learn the lessons of life.

To some degree, a person will expect to inhabit this role now, whether it is an enjoyable one or not. It is what is familiar from the past, and familiarity can trump happiness along the soul’s journey. It also happens that others expect us to inhabit this role. Some with whom we have karma will remember our skill, talent or usefulness in that role, others will simply read this energy in our field (usually unconsciously), reflecting our own memories of having performed it.

We re-create this role or function in our environments now usually without any idea why it is happening. It is how in various lives we respond to our environments. When it comes to others expecting this of us, it can be easy to give in to others’ visions of us, ideas of how we should behave and live. But, as stated above, they are either remembering us how we were or picking up on how we remember we were. We can perform this role again and again and get the same results, whether enjoyable or not; it is on a deep level who we expect ourselves to be and be perceived and therefore has much to do with who we become and how we are perceived.

Aspects to the South Node ruler tell us of the pressures and supports on us in our roles in various lives. They show us with what kinds of people we are inclined to feel comfortable and those with whom we would rather not get involved. The difference between these aspects and those to the South Node is important: Aspects to the SN ruler indicate pressures on and support for the individual, and this often differs from those to the SN, the environment.

For example, someone with a 3rd house SN is coming from a context where education and curiosity are highly valued. But if that person has a planet in the 3rd house square the SN ruler (his or her role), he or she receives friction from 3rd house people. The intention is to learn about the squaring energy in this way, but the friction will often be less than pleasant. This could manifest as feeling surrounded by 3rd house communicative or learning energy (3rd house SN), yet pressured by 3rd house kinds of people to change in undesirable ways (square from a body in the 3rd house). Such a person could come from a family in which teaching science and scientific research are highly valued as professions (3rd house). Let’s say the South Node ruler is in the 12th house squared by Jupiter in the 3rd.
